What Would You Like to Know?

 What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of pure essential oils that have been steam distilled or cold pressed from flowers, fruit, bark and roots for healing of the body and mind, and inspiration for the spirit and soul!

Experts believe our sense of smell plays a role in our well being. The "smell" receptors in your nose communicate with parts of your brain (the amygdala and hippocampus) that serve as storehouses for emotions and memories. When you breathe in essential oil molecules, some researchers believe they stimulate these parts of your brain and influence physical, emotional, and mental health. For example, scientists believe lavender stimulates the activity of brain cells in the amygdala similar to the way some sedative medications work. Other researchers think that molecules from essential oils interact in the blood with hormones or enzymes.

In addition, precious aromatics have been used for centuries in spiritual ceremony and communication with the Divine.  This connection with ancient rituals and otherworldly energies brings a felt sense of the deeply sacred to meditation, deep emotional exploration, and states of heightened consciousness.

What are chakras?

The word “chakra” means wheel of light in Sanskrit. The chakra system describes our human physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual energy fields. There are seven “major” chakra centers in the human body (and some say many more, especially in the energetic field that surrounds the human body). Each chakra contains a physical location in the body, as well as differing thoughts, beliefs, ideas, attributes, and purposes. When we are knowledgeable about our chakras, we can determine which chakra may be blocked or out of balance, then use the appropriate tools and practices to move those blocks and get the energy flowing through our whole being again.

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are antimicrobial substances in plants that form the “soul” of the plant, stored in it’s root, bark, leaves, flowers and/or seeds. Only 10% of the planets on the earth even contain an essential oil, so if you’re looking for strawberry essential oil and you can’t find it, that’s because the strawberry plant doesn’t contain essential oil! It takes a very “evolved” plant to produce essential oil. The plant produces it during times of plenty, and draws upon it during times of stress. What is plant stress? Drought, too much moisture, bacterial and insect invasion, nutrient lack. The essential oil contains many vital nutrients that bolster the plant’s vitality and survival chances. Many of the chemical components in essential oils are of a very high benefit to humans, killing bacteria on contact, and through the magic and mystery of the olfactory system, balancing our mood and energy.

Where do essential oils come from?

Essential oils come from all over the world! The most effective ones are distilled from plants that are growing in their native regions. For example, the best Lavender comes from France. This is because Lavender growing in France is from its “native” region, where it has been growing for millennium. The best Rose Otto comes from Bulgaria and Turkey. If someone is distilling all their essential oils from one region, there just won’t be the same energetic depth that comes from plants grown in their native homes.

Where does Awaken Aromatics get their essential oils?

At Awaken Aromatics, we search the world for the very best in essential oils. Beyond having knowledge around what regions produce the best in what oils, it can take an experienced “nose” to detect the more subtle aromatic and energetic qualities that make the for the “best” choice. Joni has been an aromatherapist for over 20 years. This helps our company ensure we have both the knowledge, and the “nose” to choose the best single notes for our synergies.

What does “therapeutic quality” really mean?

This term has been abused in the world of essential oils and aromatherapy. In reality, there is no North American regulating body that determines what is a “pure,” or “therapeutic” essential oil and what isn’t. There are no “certifications” when it comes to aromatherapists and their training, in North America. You can get certified in one particular school’s course (and there are some excellent ones) however there is no “association” or standards that must be met. (Europe has different protocols. See below under “Are Essential Oils Safe for Internal Use.”) So, sadly, the phrase “therapeutic quality” is often used as a marketing gimmick.

Are essential oils safe to take internally?

This is a question that sees some debate in the world of aromatherapy, and the answer depends on where you live in the world. In the U.K., it takes two years of training at an accredited institute to be able to prescribe essential oils for topical use, four years to be allowed to prescribe them internally. They are very cautious about the internal use of essential oils in the U.K. In France, you can go to your doctor and he/she can write you a prescription to be filled at your local pharmacy for essential oil treatments. They are much more liberal about internal consumption of essential oils.

It is critically important to understand that taking essential oils internally can damage soft tissue organs. Certain essential oils are more deterioration than others. And high doses of some essential oils taken internally can even be fatal. However you look at it, internal consumption of essential oils should only be done with the guidance of someone who is highly trained in their effects.

How do I use essential oils?

There are two broad categories for the use of essential oils: topical application, and inhalation. Topical application includes inhalation, because when we put an essential oil on our skin, we usually get the benefit of inhaling it too!

Topical application includes using essential oils in sprays, massage oil, body cream, hand cream, in the bath, and for a very few essential oils, directly on the skin. Most essential oils will produce a burning sensation, and skin irritation, if used directly on the skin, so watch out! Inhalation methods include inhaling straight from the bottle, from a tissue, or from your fingers, sprays, aroma lamps, atomizing diffusers, and other diffusers which blow air over a pad saturated in essential oils. There are huge differences in benefits between these methods.

What are the benefits of essential oils?

Essential oils can help ease a wide assortment of ailments; easing aches, pains, and injuries, while relieving the discomforts of many health problems. They also act on the central nervous system, relieving depression and anxiety, reducing stress, relaxing, uplifting, sedating or stimulating, supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing. The use of essential oils to connect with the world of spirit, ritual and ceremony, and subtle energies, goes back into ancient times. There is a deep mystery and power to these precious liquid gems, a kind of beauty and intelligence that is difficult to put into words. Yet, their effect on human consciousness is palpable and profound. A sense of the sacred comes in when essential oils are used to touch the spirit. And that means an experience of harmony, joy, and inner peace is part of their divine gift.

How can I tell if I’m buying quality essential oil products?

The best approach to ensuring you are buying excellent quality essential oils, is to ask a lot of questions of your supplier. Where are the oils from? Does your supplier have information such as Latin name, species, and extraction method for their oils? Are they able to provide guidance and education on the proper use of essential oils? Ensuring your supplier has as much knowledge to offer as they do product, is a way to obtain the confidence you need to trust your supplier.

What if I have allergies?

Did you know that many allergies are treated with essential oils? Essential oils typically do not contain the kind of plant materials that contain allergens, as they are from a different part of the plant that produces those allergens. A note from Jony:

“In over twenty years of facilitating Aromatherapy workshops, and creating blends for clinics, I have never witnessed one instance of an allergic reaction. Does that mean there might never be such a reaction? No. It’s possible. And it certainly is exceedingly rare.”

Why do some blends work and smell better than others?

Creating a perfectly balanced essential oil synergy (blend) is not easy! A person can know and understand the therapeutic benefits of single notes, however that doesn’t mean that they will smell lovely when blended together. Making a blend that is effective and also smells appealing, is a true marriage of science, subtle energetics, and perfumery. The skilled Aromatherapist must have in depth knowledge and experience in all those skills. This doesn’t mean the lay person can’t create a simple blend that smells pleasing, however when we move into the territory of subtle energetics, and many single notes in one blend, that’s when the “expert” is most relied upon. A note from Jony:

“Blending is a true art form that cannot be rushed. It takes years to be really good at it. And each new blend must be approached with deep curiosity and a willingness to try, try, try again. Recently, I spent 3 days evolving and perfecting our Expanded Heart Synergy, moving from brave adjustments down to tiny, subtle ones. This being “with” the oils, in such intimacy, is one of the many reasons I love their precious personalities. And blended together, they birth entirely new personalities, a new “being” that didn’t exist before they were combined. Exciting!”

How does Awaken Aromatics know which oils to use for each chakra blend?

Knowledge, skill, and experience! Every essential oil provides a host of benefits that include physical, emotional, mental and spiritual support. When it comes to energetic support, there has been much research done in many settings, over many years, as to what essential oil is appropriate for what purpose. There is a massive amount of literature available on the topic. And then there is experience. Jony has been diving into energetic work, both in a one to one practice, and group environments, for over a decade. When combined with an extensive knowledge of aromatics and chakra properties, she is able to skillfully choose which single notes work together to support each chakra in the best way. Then it all has to come together in scents that bring delight and deep benefits to the user.

Which should I choose: a spray or a roll on?

This is largely a matter of personal preference. Both deliver the synergy’s benefits in an effective way. We like to carry the roll on in our purse or backpack, and roll it on when in environments where we would like to keep the experience to ourselves, such as at the office, on public transit, in classrooms, etc. There are also certain synergies that work as a divine perfume, such as Sensuous Sacral and Expanded Heart, in which case, dabbing on the roll on is ideal. Applying a little to the Third Eye chakra before meditation, and a little under the nose, facilitates a deep journey.

The sprays are also incredibly convenient and super easy to use. They deliver a more encompassing “blast” of synergy-and energy! We also get the huge benefits of those healthy essential oils all over the face, and/or body. Essential oils are incredibly vitalizing to the skin. And when we spray our face, we tend to take a deep inhale, and aaahhh... we breath in those divine aromas and we relax, and feel grateful and at peace.
